Bio
Paul J. Hanges, Ph.D., is a Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the University of Maryland’s Psychology Department. He is also the academic director of the university’s MPS (Master’s in Professional Studies) in Industrial/Organizational Psychology program. Paul’s research centers on three themes: a) human resource practices, team/organizational diversity, and organizational climate; b) leadership and cross-cultural issues; and c) measurement/statistical methods. His 2004 co-authored book, Culture, Leadership, and Organizations: The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies, won the M. Scott Myers Award for Applied Research from the Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. He won this award again in 2011 for his work developing a new human resource selection process. Finally, his 2014 co-authored book, Strategic Leadership Across Cultures: The GLOBE Study of CEO Leadership Behavior and Effectiveness in 24 Counties, won the 2015 International Leadership Association and San Diego University’s leadership book award for scholarship. He has written over 100 books, book chapters, journal articles, and technical reports. His publications have appeared in such journals as Advances in Global Leadership, American Psychologist, Applied Psychology: An International Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of International Business Studies, Psychological Bulletin, and The Leadership Quarterly. The Hewlett Foundation, the Democracy Fund, and the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences have recently supported his work. He was awarded a one-year appointment and the title of Professor of Global Leadership at the Business School of Durham University, Durham, UK, during the 2020 calendar year. Finally, he is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Sciences, and the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology.
