Dr. Monica Kearney is a Lecturer and Assistant Chair of Equity and Inclusion in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. As a doctoral candidate her research focused on the relationship between gender roles and dating violence and college students’ abilities to recognize warning signs of dating violence. She has taught a variety of courses at the undergraduate level, including basic helping skills, domestic violence service learning, the psychology of women, multicultural psychology, counseling psychology, and the psychology of men and masculinity. Dr. Kearney chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee within the Department of Psychology. In this role, she creates and oversees initiatives aimed at creating a more equitable and inclusive climate. As a member of the DEI Committee, she has co-led several workshops for faculty members at the University on decentering whiteness from their courses and addressing microaggressions in the classroom. In 2022, she received the College of Behavioral and Social Science (BSOS) Excellence in Teaching Award, the BSOS Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award, the Social Justice Alliance Instructor of the Year Award, and the Department of Psychology’s Student Choice Award. She is passionate about using education to encourage undergraduate students to engage in social justice, activism, and advocacy within their communities.
