FIRE provides first-year students authentic research experience, broad mentorship and institutional connections that impact academic success, personal resilience and professional development. The mission of the program is to welcome students to the authentic research mission of the University of Maryland through deep immersion and mentorship in faculty-led research groups. The program is far from extracurricular - students earn 9 credits of General Education through completion of the program sequence. FIRE uses 5 established principles: authenticity, discovery, relevance, collaboration and developed resilience through iteration.

FIRE offers two streams relevant to PSYC majors: the Addiction Science stream and the Human Learning Memory and Cognition stream.
